The City of Chicago will be rolling out a new incentive program as of spring 2013, encouraging fleet buyers to replace their diesel trucks with more eco-friendly electric ones.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel described the incentive program as “first-of-its-kind” which would make Chicago the leader in building both public and private fleets of electric trucks.
Gabe Klein, commissioner of the Chicago Department of Transportation, is hoping that more buyers will be encouraged to participate due to the immediacy of the discount. Traditionally, such schemes offer a post-sale rebate.
Receipt rolls will no doubt be ticking over at dealerships as well—the vouchers will apparently cover up to 60% of the incremental costs of the electric trucks. The size of the discount will be determined by the size of the truck’s battery.
Applications for vouchers will be opened in spring, with Chicago officials indicating that about 250 vouchers will be made available for the program.
