Traditional cash registers, computer-based POS systems and receipt rolls are still around, but new technology is taking some of their traditional domain.
A recent survey from RIS News Custom Research indicates that iPads and other tablets look set to steal some ground from more traditional POS methods, and within a relatively short space of time. 62% of businesses surveyed were looking to upgrade their POS in the next two years, with 60% of them looking at mobile POS options.
Additionally, a leading competitor in the market, ShopKeep POS, announced in late December 2012 that it had raised $10 million to invest into product development. This follows an earlier 2012 funding injection of $2.2 million.
Currently, the company operates a cloud-based iPad app which allows users to process transactions and manage inventory. The company has been running since 2008, and has found most of its success amongst small business owners and cafes, with over 3000 business making use of the app.
